Text Message Phishing Scam (March 2016)

Scammers are now trying to gather debit card numbers through text message. If you receive a text message that tells you your debit card is blocked and to please call a number, DELETE it! This is an attempt to get the text message recipient to call a phone number and give his/her debit card number over the phone. Protect yourself from debit card fraud and ignore any messages like this.

Check History Phishing Scam (December 2015)

We have recently learned of a phishing attempt through email asking the individual to verify checks that have cleared on their account. The scammers are using the "WebCU" term within their email. THIS IS A SCAM made to look like an email from your credit union. Please know that we will NEVER ask you to verify information on your account through email. If you receive an email like this, delete it immediately and DO NOT respond.

If you ever receive an email asking you to verify personal information, you should always investigate it. If a company is named in the email, go to that company's website to research contact information. Contact the company through the phone number on their website. Do not use links within the email you received. If it is a fraudulent email, it could take you to website links that are made to look like the company mentioned, but they could be phishing sites. BE CAUTIOUS!

Faking it — scammers' tricks to steal your heart and money (July 2015)

Not everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money. Read more.

Virtual currencies can be risky for members (June 2015)

BitCoin and other virtual currencies are in the news a lot recently. To alert consumers to the risks arising from using virtual currencies, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued an advisory with the following concerns:

Virtual currencies are targets for hackers who have been able to breach sophisticated security systems to steal funds;

Virtual currencies can cost consumers more to use than credit cards once exchange rates are taken into consideration;

Fraudsters are taking advantage of the hype surrounding virtual currencies to cheat people through fake opportunities;

If a consumer trusts a company to hold virtual currencies and something goes wrong, that company may not offer the kind of help typically expected from banks, credit unions, or debit or credit card providers.

Your members may be asking for information about these virtual currencies, and sharing the warnings from this CFPB advisory is a great way to educate them and your staff. Read the advisory at the link below.

Beware of Fraudulent Calls Concerning Debit Cards November 2014

Fraudulent calls are being made informing recipients that their "debit card has been compromised, press one and enter your card #". Please note that these are NOT calls from your credit union. We would never call you and request you to enter personal information into the phone. Please DO NOT enter your card number should you receive one of these calls. Hang up immediately.
